An Italian pizzeria in Ōmokoroa

Some of the best pizza in the Bay of Plenty, five minutes from home.

Ōmokoroa did not have an Italian pizzeria, so we opened one. The dough is the same we have made since day one — rested a minimum of 72 hours, so the crust has flavour and stays light — and the toppings are the same imported Italian ingredients we use across both stores.
It is built around takeaway pizza: order online, park at the door, and be home before the box cools down.

Gelateria

Real Italian gelato, made here.

Not soft serve, and not ice cream. Proper artisanal gelato — churned slowly in small batches so it stays dense and silky, and served warmer and softer than ice cream so the flavour actually reaches you.

Always in the cabinet

Sicilian Pistachio
Tahitian Vanilla
South Island Hazelnut
Chocolate
Amarena Cherry
Mediterraneo - cream of lemon and basil
Those six are always there. Everything else in the cabinet changes — ask what is on when you come in. People drive out from Tauranga for it, which is a fair claim to the best gelato in the Bay of Plenty.

Small batches

We churn in small quantities rather than making a month of stock, so what is in the cabinet was made days ago, not last season.

Real ingredients

Proper nuts and fruit rather than flavouring pastes — which is why our pistachio is a muted green rather than a bright one.

Always turning over

Beyond the six residents the line-up rotates, so there is usually something in the cabinet you have not tried yet.
Mornings

Coffee, pastry and panini.

Long before the oven is lit, the other window opens. Italian pastries in the cabinet, panini made with our stonebaked sourdough pizza bread, and coffee to take across the road — Tuesday to Friday, 8:30am until 2pm.

Questions we get asked

Yes. The coffee window is open Tuesday to Friday, 8:30am until 2:30pm, with Italian pastries and panini made to order. The pizza oven is a separate service that starts at 4:00pm.

Yes, we do gluten-free bases. All our pizzas are baked in the same oven, though, so we cannot guarantee there is no cross-contamination.

Almost any pizza on the board can be made vegan — the exception is the Maialona, our Italian meat lover. We keep dairy-free vegan cheese, so we can swap the mozzarella out on anything else.

We are mainly takeaway pizzerias, though we do have a few tables where you can sit and enjoy your pizza.

Authentic Italian pizza — thin crust, soft and crispy thanks to 72 hours of slow fermentation. We make one size only: 12 inches / 30 cm.

Gelato is churned more slowly so it holds less air, which makes it denser and silkier than ice cream. It also has less fat and is served slightly warmer, so the flavours come through more clearly.
